I explain why you develop thyroid nodules.

I answer the question, what causes thyroid nodules? Really, it’s a sign of a deficiency of a specific nutrient, selenium. Let me explain.

Most selenium in the body is stored in your thyroid. Most of another trace mineral, iodine, is also stored in the thyroid. Your body needs both trace minerals in the correct ratios. If you have too much selenium and are deficient in iodine, your thyroid could be damaged, and vice versa.

Selenium acts as an antioxidant, the base of which is glutathione. Glutathione helps reduce the hydrogen peroxide your body produces as a byproduct of different chemical reactions that occur in your thyroid.

If you have the autoimmune disease of the thyroid that’s called Hashimoto’s, which most cases of hypothyroid are, a lot of hydrogen peroxide is generated. When hydrogen peroxide builds up in your tissues, it damages the thyroid cells and can create fibrosis, which could be partially responsible for thyroid nodules.

Selenium can reduce not only the free radical damage but also the antibodies involved with Hashimoto’s disease. It’s involved in converting the thyroid hormone T4 to T3. In other words, selenium is just as important for thyroid health as iodine is.

So, what type of selenium should you take to help with this condition?

You need organic selenium. In this case, organic refers to the type of bond between selenium molecules. The type I recommend for either thyroid nodules or Hashimoto’s is either selenomethionine or selenocysteine. Not both, just one.

I also recommend vitamin E, but don’t get the synthetic version. Get a version that has all the tocopherols and tocotrienols. As well, take cod liver oil. Then you’ll get the combination of vitamin E, vitamin D, vitamin E, and selenium in the perfect amounts.

You can support your thyroid health, whether you have thyroid nodules or Hashimoto’s when you apply these recommendations.
