What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic condition where the body struggles to regulate blood sugar (glucose), its main energy source. This happens due to problems with insulin, a hormone that helps glucose enter cells.

Types of Diabetes Explained Simply

  1. Type 1 Diabetes
    • Cause: The immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.
    • Who’s affected? Usually diagnosed in children/young adults (but can occur at any age).
    • Management: Requires lifelong insulin injections or pumps.
  2. Type 2 Diabetes
    • Cause: The body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t make enough. Linked to genetics, obesity, and lifestyle.
    • Who’s affected? Most common type (90% of cases), often in adults (but rising in kids).
    • Management: Diet, exercise, oral meds, or insulin in later stages.
  3. Gestational Diabetes
    • Cause: Occurs during pregnancy due to hormonal changes blocking insulin.
    • Risk: Increases chances of type 2 diabetes later for both mother and child.
    • Management: Usually temporary; controlled with diet, exercise, or insulin.
  4. Prediabetes
    • What is it? Blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet diabetic.
    • Risk: Can progress to type 2 diabetes if untreated.
    • Reversal: Often possible with weight loss, exercise, and healthy eating.

Key Symptoms

  • Frequent urination
  • Excessive thirst/hunger
  • Fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing wounds

Prevention & Management Tips

  • Eat healthy: Focus on whole foods, fiber, and low sugar.
  • Exercise regularly: Helps insulin work better.
  • Monitor blood sugar: Especially if at risk.
  • Medication/Insulin: As prescribed by a doctor.
