Insulin Resistance Explained

A quick explanation of what insulin resistance is. In this 4 minute video, I explain insulin resistance and why it leads to fatigue, cravings, and weight gain.

Insulin is a hormone that is very important to your metabolism. It controls what happens to the carbohydrates you eat. When you eat carbs, your digestive tract breaks them down into sugar and sends the sugar (glucose) to your blood. Insulin carries the blood glucose to 3 cells: your liver cells, muscle cells, and fat cells, where it can be used or stored for future energy.

If you’re insulin resistant, your cells are ”resistant” to insulin. In other words, insulin takes the glucose to your cells, but your cells lock their doors and don’t let the glucose inside. Your pancreas pumps out more insulin to force the doors open, but this increased insulin inhibits fat burning. Because the cells don’t have glucose for energy, you feel tired and you crave more carbs.

To fix insulin resistance:
Sleep at least 7 hours
Exercise regularly
Diet: Choose slow-digesting carbohydrates
