How Much Weight Does Hypothyroidism Cause?

Most people know that hypothyroidism leads to weight gain but what they fail to realize is just how much of their weight is caused directly by their thyroid. On average, low thyroid states only lead to about 10-15 pounds of extra weight. Why is it then that many thyroid patients have 20, 30, 40, or even 50 pounds to lose? And why do they attribute that weight to their thyroid? Well, they aren’t wrong, but the connection between this level of weight gain and the thyroid is not as straightforward as you might think. Low thyroid states set the body up for developing other hormone problems, such as leptin resistance, insulin resistance, and estrogen dominance, that can cause you to gain weight which stacks on top of the weight from your thyroid. In this way, your thyroid can be both directly and indirectly responsible for differing amounts of weight gain. The key? Treat your thyroid and each condition individually to lose all of the weight. #thyroid #thyroidweightgain #weightgain #weightloss #hypothyroid
