Spearmint Tea – Benefits, Uses, and How to Brew

Traditionally, it has been valued for digestive support, hormonal balance, and calming effects. Recent studies also suggest specific benefits for women with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome).

Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is a fragrant herb in the mint family, known for its mild, sweet flavor. Spearmint tea is made by steeping the fresh or dried leaves in hot water, producing a naturally caffeine-free beverage.

Potential Health Benefits

1. Hormonal Balance in Women

  • PCOS Support: Some small studies have found that spearmint tea may help reduce elevated androgen (male hormone) levels in women with PCOS, potentially improving symptoms like excessive facial hair (hirsutism) and irregular periods.
  • Mechanism: May work by influencing hormone metabolism and reducing free testosterone.

2. Digestive Aid

  • Naturally soothing to the stomach
  • May reduce bloating, indigestion, and gas
  • Can have a mild antispasmodic effect, easing cramping

3. Anti-inflammatory & Antioxidant

  • Contains rosmarinic acid and flavonoids that help protect cells from oxidative stress
  • Mild anti-inflammatory effect, which may benefit skin health and joint comfort

4. Calming & Stress Relief

  • The aroma and mild sedative properties may help reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.

How to Brew Spearmint Tea

  1. Ingredients:
    • 1 tablespoon fresh spearmint leaves or 1 teaspoon dried leaves
    • 1 cup hot water (about 90–95°C; not boiling)
  2. Method:
    • Place spearmint leaves in a cup or teapot
    • Pour hot water over the leaves
    • Cover and steep for 5–7 minutes
    • Strain and serve, plain or with a small amount of honey
  3. Serving Tip: Best consumed warm. For a refreshing summer drink, chill and serve over ice.

When to Drink

  • For PCOS support: 1–2 cups daily, ideally for at least a month to notice hormonal effects (based on small clinical trials)
  • For digestion: After meals to ease bloating
  • For relaxation: In the evening as a caffeine-free calming drink

Precautions

  • Generally safe for most people in moderate amounts
  • Pregnant women should consult their doctor before daily use
  • Those with allergies to mint family plants should avoid it
  • Not a substitute for medical treatment in PCOS or other hormonal disorders — should be part of a comprehensive plan

Bottom Line

Spearmint tea is a refreshing, naturally caffeine-free herbal drink with potential benefits for digestion, relaxation, and hormonal balance in women with PCOS. It’s easy to prepare, affordable, and can be enjoyed hot or cold.
For best results in hormonal support, it should be consumed regularly along with other lifestyle and dietary changes.
