{"id":39177,"date":"2026-05-25T14:16:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-25T14:16:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pickbydoc.com\/?p=39177"},"modified":"2026-05-25T14:16:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-25T14:16:09","slug":"chinas-huawei-touts-chip-design-breakthrough-in-bid-to-defy-u-s-sanctions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pickbydoc.com\/?p=39177","title":{"rendered":"China\u2019s Huawei touts chip design breakthrough in bid to defy U.S. sanctions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p id=\"anchor-0e73dd\" class=\"body-graf\">SHANGHAI \u2014 Chinese tech giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/business-news\/china-says-us-undermined-trade-talks-huawei-chip-warning-rcna207783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Huawei<\/a> said Monday that it had achieved a breakthrough that would allow it to make cutting-edge chips within five years, touting the news as a significant milestone in Beijing\u2019s effort to circumvent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/tech-news\/senate-bill-ban-sale-key-ai-chipmaking-machines-china-rcna265186\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. technology restrictions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><button class=\"styles_subscriptionCTA__LOUeY\" id=\"subscriptionCTA\" type=\"button\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"styles_textWrapper__vxvko\">\n<p class=\"styles_text__daaVB styles_textLarge__qlzwu\">Subscribe to read this story ad-free    <\/p>\n<p class=\"styles_text__daaVB\">Get unlimited access to ad-free articles and exclusive content.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/rockcms\/2026-01\/arrow-f55fa5.svg\" alt=\"arrow\" class=\"styles_arrow__tnruW\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/button><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b3ac1b\" class=\"body-graf\">With the United States and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/asia\/china-south-korea-tungsten-iran-war-mine-rcna346266\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China<\/a> vying for global dominance in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/tech\/tech-news\/pope-leo-address-human-dignity-age-ai-rcna345744\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">artificial intelligence<\/a>, U.S. sanctions that began in 2019 have largely cut Huawei off from global makers of semiconductor chips, the tiny brains that power everything from smartphones to computers to cars.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b3fbde\" class=\"body-graf\">Washington has also limited Beijing\u2019s access to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/asia\/china-hits-back-trump-saying-us-actions-severely-undermine-trade-truce-rcna210294\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chip design software<\/a> and semiconductor manufacturing equipment such as lithography machines, leading the Chinese government to invest billions into developing its own semiconductor supply chain.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6a927b\" class=\"body-graf\">Huawei said Monday at a tech conference in Shanghai that by 2031, its high-end chips would have transistor density equivalent to 1.4-nanometer processes, which is considered the industry\u2019s cutting edge. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-edbf25\" class=\"body-graf\">That compares with the 7 nanometers China\u2019s most advanced chipmaking capability is currently thought to be, and the 2-nm manufacturing technology used by Taiwan-based TSMC, the world\u2019s leading maker of advanced chips. This means that rather than achieving performance gains by shrinking transistors \u2014 a process requiring extreme ultraviolet lithography machines that China can\u2019t access \u2014 Huawei is folding traditional 2D circuits into 3D vertical skyscrapers, essentially stacking chips on top of each other.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e753e1\" class=\"body-graf\">Huawei, which did not provide any independent performance data to support its announcement, on Monday also debuted a new principle called the Tau Scaling Law, which focuses on cutting the time it takes data to move through chips by folding and stacking them. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-845cd2\" class=\"body-graf\">That\u2019s a departure from Moore\u2019s Law, which has long guided the industry with the idea of fitting more transistors onto tinier chips but is widely seen as approaching its limits.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-bcd998\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThe industry will face these problems sooner or later,\u201d He, who is known in the Chinese tech industry as Huawei\u2019s \u201cchip queen,\u201d told reporters through a translator after her speech. \u201cWe have confidence in this path because we have practice as proof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-bf2b80\" class=\"body-graf\">The new methodology isn\u2019t without challenges, He said. The traditional tools are not yet sufficient for full-scale free logic design, she said, and thermal management remains a critical issue since the components are stacked vertically.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-31f103\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cCost, power, heat and system integration remain major challenges\u201d for Chinese tech, according to analyst Brady Wang, associate director at Counterpoint Research.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-18c576\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cIn the short term, China may narrow the gap with global leaders, but a technology gap with the most advanced nodes will still remain,\u201d he told the Reuters news agency.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d6ec96\" class=\"body-graf\">But with the paradigm shift from Moore\u2019s Law to the Tau Scaling Law (nicknamed \u201cHer\u2019s Law\u201d after He), Huawei could bypass the shortage of lithography machines and move one step closer to self-reliance in the global chip race.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-082309\" class=\"body-graf\">On Chinese social media platform Weibo, the hashtag #HuaweiSemiconductorFieldNewBreakthrough has generated 40 million views and counting. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2748b1\" class=\"body-graf\">Some commenters described it as the \u201cDeepSeek moment\u201d for China\u2019s chip industry, referring to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/china-ai-what-is-deepseek-rcna189548\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AI model released by a Chinese start-up<\/a> last year that was said to match or outperform leading American models at a fraction of the cost.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-28822b\" class=\"body-graf\">Others said U.S. sanctions had encouraged Chinese innovation.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0cd395\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThe more sanctions there are from the West, the more breakthroughs China will make!\u201d one Weibo user wrote.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-548c0d\" class=\"body-graf\">After the U.S. restrictions sent it into \u201csurvival mode,\u201d Huawei made a comeback in 2023 with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/china-huawei-launches-mate-60-smartphone-5g-chip-breakthrough-rcna117124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launch of its Mate 60<\/a> series of smartphones, whose surprisingly advanced, China-produced 5G chip raised questions about whether the restrictions were still working.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1095d0\" class=\"body-graf\">In September last year, Huawei announced a three-year road map for building AI chips, effectively filling the void left by Nvidia being shut out of the China market.
