He beat Antonelli to pole position by exactly 0.068 seconds for both the sprint race and the Grand Prix, a number that Antonelli quipped he would remember for a long time. Russell also won the sprint race Saturday and narrowly led Antonelli on Sunday<strong> <\/strong>before his mechanical failure.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2c96c1\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cA bit lost for words right now,\u201d Russell told Sky F1 on the live broadcast. \u201cFrom my side, I don\u2019t feel like there\u2019s anything more I could have done this weekend, so I\u2019ll leave satisfied. Of course, I\u2019m really damn frustrated with what\u2019s happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5349cd\" class=\"body-graf\">Russell began this year as the championship favorite. But just five contests into the 22-race season, Antonelli has shown his killer instinct and established himself as a serious contender for the 2026 title. It represents a turnaround from his rookie season last year, when he was no match for the faster Russell.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f0d05b\" class=\"body-graf\">The two drivers gave fans a thrilling battle Sunday in Montreal.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-33dc10\" class=\"body-graf\">Antonelli overtook Russell at the start, but Russell retook the position on lap 6 on the back straight before the final chicane. Antonelli was furious, accusing Russell of \u201cnaughty\u201d tactics and pushing him off track, and he even called for a penalty for his teammate on team radio. But McLaren\u2019s fortunes rapidly took a nosedive Sunday. Norris and Oscar Piastri gambled on intermediate tires, which didn\u2019t work out on the drying track. Both pitted early on for slick tires, falling far behind the leaders. And both had to pit a second time amid reliability concerns. Norris later retired after his car broke down. Piastri finished 11th.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-807e48\" class=\"body-graf\">The next F1 race is June 7 on the streets of Monaco.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-89b396\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">It \u201ccould be a tricky one,\u201d Antonelli said after the race. \u201cBut we\u2019ll try to be ready for anything.
