This includes stripping DOJ\u2019s website of partisan propaganda.\u201d <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-46dd65\" class=\"body-graf\">A review by NBC News found that the vast majority of press releases pertaining to Jan. 6 defendants have been removed from the DOJ website as of Friday evening.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-67a8cc\" class=\"body-graf\">The move to wipe hundreds of press releases from the official government site is the latest attempt by the Trump administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/five-years-jan-6-trump-rewriting-narrative-capitol-siege-rcna240115\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to reframe the Jan. 6 siege<\/a> and to paint the rioters who participated in it as victims. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-375c5d\" class=\"body-graf\">On his first day back in office, President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/elections\/trump-pardons-rudy-giuliani-others-involved-bid-overturn-2020-election-rcna242956\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mass pardoned the rioters.<\/a> Soon after, Justice Department officials and FBI agents who were a part of the Jan. 6 investigation and prosecutions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/trump-administration-fires-doj-officials-worked-criminal-investigation-rcna189512\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">were fired. <\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-de6f9a\" class=\"body-graf\">And this week, the Justice Department announced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/trump-voluntarily-drops-10-billion-lawsuit-irs-leaked-tax-records-rcna345193\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a $1.8 billion \u201canti-weaponization\u201d fund <\/a>aimed to compensate those who \u201csuffered weaponization and lawfare.\u201d <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b37fde\" class=\"body-graf\">After acting Attorney General Todd Blanche did not rule out Jan. 6 rioters\u2019 eligibility to be paid by the fund, outrage swelled from both Democrats and Republicans in Congress. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-945534\" class=\"body-graf\">Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., wrote Wednesday that the \u201cnotion of the federal government doling out compensation to rioters\u201d was \u201cabsurd and offensive,\u201d in a letter to Blanche. Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., called the fund a \u201cpayout pot for punks,\u201d on Thursday. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2b342f\" class=\"body-graf\">Lawmakers aren\u2019t the only ones who are fighting back against the fund. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9f0366\" class=\"body-graf\">A fired Jan. 6 prosecutor and a law professor acquitted in a federal case brought by the Trump administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/jan-6-prosecutor-trump-administration-targets-sue-weaponization-fund-rcna346523\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filed a lawsuit Friday,<\/a> arguing that the fund creates a politically discriminatory process that excludes certain individuals who say they were mistreated by Republican officials.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6a6e1e\" class=\"body-graf\">Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, a watchdog organization in D.C., also filed suit Friday, calling the fund \u201ca jaw-dropping act of presidential corruption.\u201d It argued the fund wasn\u2019t approved by Congress, unlike prior funds that were aimed to compensate victims.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-748a90\" class=\"body-graf\">And Wednesday, two officers who protected the Capitol on Jan. 6 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/jan-6-officers-sue-18b-pot-call-slush-fund-insurrectionists-rcna346103\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filed a separate suit<\/a>, alleging that the fund would \u201cdirectly finance the violent operations of rioters, paramilitaries, and their supporters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-231cac\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">The lawsuits come after Ed Martin, who was removed from his role as head of the Justice Department\u2019s \u201cweaponization\u201d working group earlier this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/doj-official-told-gop-ally-big-payouts-coming-jan-6-defendants-rcna343847\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">predicted that the Justice Department would give millions of dollars <\/a>to those charged over their actions on Jan. 6. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/justice-department-deletes-press-releases-charges-jan-6-rioters-rcna346613\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Justice Department has removed press releases detailing the charges against hundreds of individuals who participated in the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot from its website, the department confirmed Friday.
