{"id":38612,"date":"2026-05-21T01:39:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T01:39:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pickbydoc.com\/?p=38612"},"modified":"2026-05-21T01:39:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T01:39:10","slug":"former-prosecutor-emailed-herself-the-unreleased-jack-smith-report-doj-alleges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pickbydoc.com\/?p=38612","title":{"rendered":"Former prosecutor emailed herself the unreleased Jack Smith report, DOJ alleges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p id=\"anchor-8d4236\" class=\"body-graf\">A former federal prosecutor was indicted on charges she emailed herself confidential files from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/jack-smith-memo-trump-classified-documents-cannon-congress-doj-rcna265060\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> special counsel Jack Smith\u2019s investigation of allegations that President Donald Trump<\/a> mishandled classified documents, the Justice Department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-ndfl\/pr\/former-doj-attorney-indicted-concealment-theft-government-records\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><button class=\"styles_subscriptionCTA__LOUeY\" id=\"subscriptionCTA\" type=\"button\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"styles_textWrapper__vxvko\">\n<p class=\"styles_text__daaVB styles_textLarge__qlzwu\">Subscribe to read this story ad-free    <\/p>\n<p class=\"styles_text__daaVB\">Get unlimited access to ad-free articles and exclusive content.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/rockcms\/2026-01\/arrow-f55fa5.svg\" alt=\"arrow\" class=\"styles_arrow__tnruW\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/button><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-70b7b7\" class=\"body-graf\">Carmen Mercedes Lineberger, 62, was charged with four counts related to stealing, concealing and altering government property and records, according to the nine-page indictment.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-94d36b\" class=\"body-graf\">The Justice Department alleges that while she was a managing assistant U.S. attorney in the Southern District of Florida last year, Lineberger received a copy of a confidential volume of Smith\u2019s report. She altered file names of the volume, as well as other internal Justice Department materials, and sent them to her personal Hotmail and Gmail accounts, according to court documents.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6a61a4\" class=\"body-graf\">Court documents allege that from September to December, Lineberger used file names including \u201cchocolate cake recipe\u201d and \u201cbundt cake recipe\u201d to avoid raising red flags about the downloaded files. The indictment does not say Lineberger shared the files with anyone.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-101a17\" class=\"body-graf\">Lineberger was arraigned in federal court Wednesday in West Palm Beach, Florida. If she is convicted on all charges, she could face more than 20 years in prison.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-25e232\" class=\"body-graf\">Lineberger\u2019s attorney declined to comment to NBC News.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f71e18\" class=\"body-graf\">The U.S. Attorney\u2019s Office for the Northern District of Florida is prosecuting the case, rather than a prosecutor from Lineberger\u2019s former place of employment.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c79cd3\" class=\"body-graf\">The files found in Lineberger\u2019s personal email accounts include documents from a report a Trump-nominated federal judge ruled could not be released in February, according to the charging documents.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-cdf640\" class=\"body-graf\">U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon in February <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/trump-appointee-aileen-cannon-blocks-release-jack-smiths-report-classi-rcna260237\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">barred the public release of Smith\u2019s report<\/a> on whether Trump had mishandled classified documents after he left the White House in 2021. Cannon argued that since Smith had worked on the report after she<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/florida-judge-dismisses-trump-classified-documents-case-rcna161878\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> dismissed the case against Trump <\/a>in July 2024, Smith\u2019s appointment as special counsel was unconstitutional.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3572aa\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">NBC News reported in March that a memo the Justice Department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/trump-administration\/jack-smith-memo-trump-classified-documents-cannon-congress-doj-rcna265060\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sent to Congress<\/a> said Smith\u2019s team had evidence Trump kept classified documents after he left office, including those related to his business interests. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/former-prosecutor-emailed-unreleased-jack-smith-report-doj-alleges-rcna346224\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A former federal prosecutor was indicted on charges she emailed herself confidential files from special counsel Jack Smith\u2019s investigation of allegations that President Donald Trump mishandled classified documents, the Justice Department said Wednesday.
