The conservative activist called for \u201cdie-hard true Americans\u201d to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/ed-martin-advocate-jan-6-defendants-interim-chief-us-attorney-dc-rcna188446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">work until their \u201clast breath\u201d to \u201cstop the steal\u201d<\/a> of the 2020 presidential election in a speech at the Capitol on the eve of Jan. 6, 2021. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5fbf6a\" class=\"body-graf\">Martin got to know Trump when he hosted fundraisers for Capitol siege defendants on Trump properties. Martin was then named interim top federal prosecutor in the District of Columbia, where he oversaw the dismissal of hundreds of Jan. 6 cases and the firing or demotions of dozens of prosecutors who worked on the case. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e73954\" class=\"body-graf\">It was his support for the \u201cJ6ers\u201d that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/thom-tillis-wont-support-ed-martin-dc-us-attorney-rcna205104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cost him the backing<\/a> of Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., who blocked Martin\u2019s confirmation to hold the post permanently. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7c7992\" class=\"body-graf\">He told a conservative podcaster that Tillis asked him if he favored \u201creparations\u201d for Jan. 6 rioters. \u201cWe should do it, we shouldn\u2019t be afraid,\u201d Martin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/PdR6nldD9-g?si=vBaBCLASEhMXzC-z&amp;t=2500\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said in the May 2025 interview<\/a>. \u201cYou\u2019re damn right I want to pay J6ers. If you got wronged by the government, then you should be made right. That\u2019s America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-98a6c2\" class=\"body-graf\">After the fund was announced Monday, Martin praised the decision in an online post. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-242423\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cTo the survivors of political weaponization: The lesson of the last few days is to never stop fighting. Never stand down, never disarm, and follow the lead of President Trump who never stops fighting,\u201d he posted on X. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9c0d02\" class=\"body-graf\">Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, testifying before the Senate Appropriations Committee on Tuesday, said that anyone may apply to receive a payout, though decisions on who or how much they receive will be made by a commission made up of five members; four chosen by Blanche, and one chosen by Blanche<strong> <\/strong>in consultation with Congress. Trump can remove anyone he chooses. Justice officials did not say whether Martin would be one of them. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9159d5\" class=\"body-graf\">Blanche said there was a broad lane for anyone to apply who felt they were the victims of a weaponized government.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-17ba0a\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cSo whether you\u2019re Hunter Biden, or whether you\u2019re another individual who believed they were a victim of weaponization, they can all apply,\u201d he said, referring to the son of former President Joe Biden <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/verdict-reached-hunter-biden-gun-trial-rcna155458\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">who was convicted of gun charges in a case<\/a> he decried as political. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b0bc6f\" class=\"body-graf\">Applying doesn\u2019t mean a guarantee of money, and Blanche insisted that Jan. 6 rioters weren\u2019t automatically going to be paid out. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6b35e6\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cDoes it mean they\u2019re going to get money? No,\u201d he said. \u201cIt just means they are allowed to apply.\u201d <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1e3e51\" class=\"body-graf\">That\u2019s not how rioters see it.  <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-602d19\" class=\"body-graf\">Thousands of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in a failed effort to stop the certification of Biden\u2019s win. More than 140 police officers were injured in the melee and millions of dollars in damage was done. Five people died, including Jan. 6 rioter Ashli Babbitt, who was shot and killed as she jumped through a broken window leading to the House Speaker\u2019s Lobby. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/top-stories\/latest\/ashli-babbitt-settlement-jan-6-trump-doj-rcna204525\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Trump administration settled with her estate last year<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-970e7a\" class=\"body-graf\">Vice President JD Vance said Tuesday the requests would be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, including possibly those accused of harming police. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-29c679\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWe\u2019re trying to compensate people where the book was thrown at them, they were mistreated by the legal system,\u201d Vance said. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3692c1\" class=\"body-graf\">The president has described the rioters as peaceful protesters. It\u2019s not clear whether those suits will still be defended. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-136fbb\" class=\"body-graf\">It may not matter. Two lawyers who were involved with the legal effort and say they represent more than 400 Jan. 6 participants said Tuesday that they expected their clients to apply through the fund, rather than continue with litigation.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3a199e\" class=\"body-graf\">Martin has been a critical player in the effort, they said. Even after he was pushed out as head of the \u201cweaponization working group,\u201d Martin has maintained influence in the Trump administration. He\u2019s frequently seen at the White House, and continues in the role of U.S. pardon attorney, advising the president on clemency actions.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-12e72b\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cEd\u2019s a real trouper for us,\u201d said one of the Jan. 6 lawyers, Mark McCloskey, a St. Louis-based attorney behind one of the legal efforts. McCloskey and another lawyer, Peter Ticktin, who attended the New York Military Academy with the president, said they had been lobbying the White House for payouts on behalf of their clients. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a2722b\" class=\"body-graf\">In an interview after Monday\u2019s announcement, McCloskey said he was \u201cpretty darn excited\u201d about the fund, calling it \u201cvery similar\u201d to what they had been suggesting.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-591fa5\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cIt\u2019s a program that we\u2019ve been lobbying for for the past 13, 14 months, and I couldn\u2019t be happier that it\u2019s finally coming to fruition,\u201d McCloskey said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-bf4e87\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cIt was kind of shocking to me \u2026 with all the other things going on, that he would do this right now,\u201d McCloskey said. \u201cI thought his mind would be occupied elsewhere, but I\u2019m very pleased that he paid attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-727431\" class=\"body-graf\">Ticktin, who had criticized Blanche for not taking action for the Jan. 6 defendants sooner, credited Trump with pushing forward with the fund.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-d20f9a\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWe\u2019re moving in the direction that the president had originally wanted to go,\u201d Ticktin said. \u201cFor some reason it wasn\u2019t happening in the DOJ under Todd Blanche, and now it is happening under Todd Blanche, I think because he\u2019s looking for the position of attorney general, so now he has to show that he can perform.\u201d <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-2f41e6\" class=\"body-graf\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/verdict-reached-hunter-biden-gun-trial-rcna155458\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blanche has repeatedly<\/a> denied that he\u2019s auditioning for the job, but has said it would be an honor to be nominated. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c6723a\" class=\"body-graf\">The news of the fund, which is expected to be challenged in court, drew immediate scrutiny from Democrats, who described it as a slush fund for Trump allies, and from some Republicans.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b45a43\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cNot a big fan,\u201d said Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Tuesday. \u201cI\u2019m not exactly sure how they would use it &#8230;  But yeah, I don\u2019t see a purpose for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0050fe\" class=\"body-graf\">Skye Perryman, the president and CEO of Democracy Forward, a national legal group formed in the wake of the 2016 presidential election, said there was no legal authority for it. The group on has demanded Trump administration officials preserve their internal communications over the decision, a sign of an upcoming legal challenge. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9a9a7d\" class=\"body-graf\">Unlike a civil lawsuit, where a federal judge adjudicates claims, evidence is gathered and legal arguments are made in open court, the Justice Department\u2019s fund will have no other oversight aside from the commissioners and Justice Department. Months later, after he was arrested on charges of child molestation, law enforcement officials said Johnson tried to bribe a victim with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/pardoned-capitol-rioter-tried-bribe-child-sex-victim-promise-jan-6-pay-rcna244627\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the money he expected to get<\/a> from the Trump administration. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6b8b62\" class=\"body-graf\">At the Senate hearing on Tuesday, Blanche tried to slough off any knowledge that Jan. 6 rioters had been seeking what they have called reparations, and said the fund would be doled out on a \u201ccase-by-case basis.\u201d But he would not say whether rioters would not be allowed to partake.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6c8c52\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cYou\u2019re asking me to speculate on the possibility of something,\u201d he told lawmakers. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a4ef2e\" class=\"body-graf\">Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., exasperated, asked whether Blanche could say that Johnson, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/crime-courts\/jan-6-rioter-pardoned-trump-convicted-child-molestation-rcna258635\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">convicted<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/jan-6-rioter-pardoned-trump-jan-6-case-gets-life-sentence-child-sex-cr-rcna261963\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sentenced to life in prison earlier this year<\/a>, would be barred from receiving money from the fund. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-51a98b\" class=\"body-graf\">Blanche said he found the details of the case \u201cdisgusting.\u201d <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f02ee0\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">But he wouldn\u2019t say whether Johnson was eligible for money.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/justice-department\/doj-official-told-gop-ally-big-payouts-coming-jan-6-defendants-rcna343847\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ed Martin has been one of the biggest supporters of Jan. 6 defendants in the Trump administration.
