Commentary from executives is expected to provide an early read on both consumer confidence and the housing market, in which average mortgage rates nationwide Monday were 6.68% for a 30-year fixed loan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mortgagenewsdaily.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to Mortgage News Daily<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-002ee4\" class=\"body-graf\">So far this spring, early spending data suggests consumers are still holding up all right \u2014 but not evenly.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-48020c\" class=\"body-graf\">According to a recent report from the Bank of America Institute, total credit and debit card spending per household rose 4.8% in April from a year ago, the strongest single-month increase in three years. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9788e5\" class=\"body-graf\">But beneath the headline resilience, economists say, an even sharper divide is emerging.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f41265\" class=\"body-graf\">The so-called K-shaped economy \u2014 in which spending by wealthier households accounts for an outsized share of overall consumer spending while lower-income families struggle \u2014 has widened in recent months, according to economists.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ce5561\" class=\"body-graf\">The report found lower- and middle-income consumers were increasingly pulling back on discretionary spending categories like dining and entertainment, while wealthier households \u2014 boosted by strong stock market gains and rising home equity values \u2014 continue to spend at a healthy pace.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3817ef\" class=\"body-graf\">And with inflation running at 3.8% in April, above the wage growth rate of 3.6% that month, economists warn that financial pressure on lower-income households could intensify.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1fc9b1\" class=\"body-graf\">And if the gap continues to widen, it could complicate the Federal Reserve\u2019s path under incoming Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, who is expected to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/05\/18\/kevin-warsh-trump-federal-reserve-chair.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sworn in as the central bank\u2019s next chief<\/a> Friday. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-16e5bf\" class=\"body-graf\">Warsh, who already said he was open to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/economy\/policy\/articles\/kevin-warsh-returns-federal-regime-173819338.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">regime change<\/a>\u201d at the Fed, will assume the top job when persistent inflation could force the central bank to keep interest rates higher for longer than anyone could have imagined just a few months ago \u2014 to prevent the economy from overheating. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1b50f5\" class=\"body-graf\">Higher benchmark interest rates from the Fed have a direct impact on consumer lending costs, which means the same elevated borrowing costs would continue to keep the pressure on businesses and consumers who are already struggling to keep up with rising costs.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b0e62c\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">\u201cWhile households still have some near\u2011term buffers \u2014 including tax refunds and savings \u2014 these too are unevenly distributed, underscoring the growing gap between headline resilience and stress experienced by some households,\u201d Bank of America economists said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/business\/consumer\/home-depot-earnings-walmart-inflation-rcna345368\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Four of America\u2019s largest retailers will report their quarterly earnings this week, and the most pressing question the reports will answer is whether Americans are finally starting to buckle under the weight of rising prices.
