hantavirus outbreak arrived early Sunday off the Spanish island of Tenerife, where the process of sending passengers back to their home countries will get underway. <\/p>\n<p><button class=\"styles_subscriptionCTA__LOUeY\" id=\"subscriptionCTA\" type=\"button\"><\/p>\n<div class=\"styles_textWrapper__vxvko\">\n<p class=\"styles_text__daaVB styles_textLarge__qlzwu\">Subscribe to id=\"anchor-56b5a3\" class=\"body-graf\">The ship, the MV Hondius, could be seen in the distance around 5:30 a.m. local time Sunday (12:30 a.m. ET) from the Granadilla Port, where a medical tent was set up overnight.  <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-fed527\" class=\"body-graf\">The Hondius has had six passengers with confirmed  cases of hantavirus and two with suspected cases, the World Health Organization said Friday.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-438cea\" class=\"body-graf\">Three of those people have died, officials said, including two who died while aboard the ship.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0387d8\" class=\"body-graf\">After disembarking, passengers \u2014\u00a0all of whom are asymptomatic \u2014\u00a0will be brought on small boats to shore, where they will undergo a medical screening before boarding repatriation flights, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO\u2019s head of epidemic and pandemic preparedness, said Saturday. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6ee8a6\" class=\"body-graf\">The 17 Americans still aboard the Hondius will be flown to the United States and will be observed at the National Quarantine Unit, a facility on the University of Nebraska Medical Center campus in Omaha that specializes in handling patients with highly hazardous communicable diseases, the medical center said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-828b3e\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWe are prepared for situations exactly like this,\u201d Dr. Michael Ash, CEO of Nebraska Medicine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nebraskamed.com\/health\/nebraska-medicine-news\/biocontainment-unit\/nebraska-medicineunmc-asked-to-monitor-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said in a statement Friday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3e1b1f\" class=\"body-graf\">The governments of Spain, the United Kingdom and France have made preparations for their nationals aboard the ship to return to those countries and be quarantined or isolated.<\/p>\n<section class=\"inline-video inline-video--in-body\" data-testid=\"inline-video\" alt=\"\"\/><\/picture><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<p id=\"anchor-5e147b\" class=\"body-graf\">The Dutch-owned ship, along with some crew and the passengers\u2019 luggage, will continue on the five-day journey to Rotterdam in the Netherlands, according to cruise operator Oceanwide Expeditions.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c34959\" class=\"body-graf\">The body of a person who died on board will also remain on the ship, which will undergo a disinfection process in the Netherlands, Spanish Minister of Health M\u00f3nica Garc\u00eda said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-fb371a\" class=\"body-graf\">Health officials have stressed that the risk to the global population  and to the residents of Tenerife, off the coast of West Africa, is low.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-36925c\" class=\"body-graf\">In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/09-05-2026-message-by-the-who-director-general-to-the-people-of-tenerife-regarding-the-hantavirus-response\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">message to Tenerife residents<\/a> Saturday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus addressed concerns about the risk of spread.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3818b2\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThe pain of 2020 is still real, and I do not dismiss it for a single moment, Tedros said. \u201cBut I need you to hear me clearly: this is not another COVID. The current public health risk from hantavirus remains low. My colleagues and I have said this unequivocally, and I will say it again to you now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-585c5c\" class=\"body-graf\">People get hantavirus through contact with rodents, especially when exposed to their urine, droppings and saliva. The origin of the first case \u201csuggest possible exposure to rodents during bird watching activities,\u201d the WHO said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b27374\" class=\"body-graf\">Of the group of viruses, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/hantavirus-andes-virus-what-is-cruise-ship-outbreak-deadly-strain-rcna343901\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">only the Andes <\/a>\u2014 the strain in the Hondius case \u2014 is known to spread between people, but those people usually have very close contact with each other, according to the WHO.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-6aee34\" class=\"body-graf\">On May 2, a month after the ship left Ushuaia, Argentina, \u201ca cluster of passengers with severe respiratory illness\u201d on board was reported to the WHO, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/item\/2026-DON600\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the health organization said<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-34efef\" class=\"body-graf\">At that time, the ship had 147 passengers and crew, but 34 passengers and crew had previously disembarked, the WHO said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1949b1\" class=\"body-graf\">The report came weeks after the first death, a Dutch man who died on board on April 11. At that point, \u201cthe cause of death was unknown and there was no evidence of a virus or contagion on board,\u201d Oceanwide Expeditions has said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f5f2b0\" class=\"body-graf\">His wife died at a South African clinic on April 26, the WHO said. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c2a9ea\" class=\"body-graf\">The third fatality, a German woman, happened on board on May 2, according to the WHO and Oceanwide Expeditions. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-ecfe51\" class=\"body-graf\">Two days later, hantavirus was confirmed in a passenger who had been medically evacuated to a hospital in South Africa, the company said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-5a159f\" class=\"body-graf\">Hantavirus can have a fatality rate of around 40%-50%, the WHO says, and the elderly are particularly at risk.
