They said those discussions should include an explanation that many foods marketed as \u201chealthier\u201d are often ultra-processed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The scientists said this guidance is particularly important for people at risk for heart disease. They further noted that most dietary guidelines prioritize nutrient-centered recommendations but don\u2019t address food processing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The scientists recommended that medical professionals promote better public understanding of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/how-to-read-food-labels\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">food labeling<\/a>, food regulation, and updated guidelines. They reached their conclusions by reviewing all published research on ultra-processed foods and cardiovascular health. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201c[Ultra-processed foods], made from industrial ingredients and additives, have largely replaced traditional diets,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/esc365.escardio.org\/person\/343533\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Luigina Guasti<\/a>, MD, an associate professor at the University of Insubria in Italy and a co-author of the statement, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.escardio.org\/news\/press\/press-releases\/limit-ultra-processed-foods-to-lower-risk-of-heart-disease-say-experts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">press release<\/a>. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cResearch suggests these foods are linked to several risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/obesity\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">obesity<\/a>, diabetes, and high blood pressure, and to the risk of developing and dying from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/heart-disease\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heart disease<\/a>. However, this evidence has not yet made its way into the advice we give to patients on healthy eating,\u201d Guasti continued.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"tabbed-article-section\"><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/food-nutrition\/ultra-processed-foods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Ultra-processed foods<\/a> are foods that have been altered from their original form and contain additives such as sugar and salt, as well as substances that aren\u2019t typically used in culinary preparations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Those additional substances add flavor and texture to foods but can also increase the risk of several diseases.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-news\/ultraprocessed-foods-premature-death-global-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">2025 study<\/a> concluded that ultra-processed foods are tied to more than 120,000 preventable deaths in the United States every year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-news\/ultraprocessed-foods-impact-muscle-bone-health-fertility\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> has also linked ultra-processed foods to worse muscle health, weakened bones, and fertility issues in females.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The European scientists reported that adults with a high consumption of ultra-processed foods have a 19% higher risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/coronary-artery-disease\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coronary artery disease<\/a>, a 13% higher risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/atrial-fibrillation\/types-of-atrial-fibrillation\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">atrial fibrillation (AFib)<\/a>, and as much as a 65% higher risk of cardiovascular-related death compared with adults with a lower consumption of ultra-processed foods.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>They added that ultra-processed foods also worsen key risk factors for conditions such as obesity, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/type-2-diabetes\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">type 2 diabetes<\/a>, high blood pressure, and the buildup of unhealthy fats in the bloodstream.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>They reported that the risk from ultra-processed foods seems to be consistent across large, diverse populations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/cheng-han-chen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Cheng-Han Chen<\/a>, MD, an interventional cardiologist and medical director of the Structural Heart Program at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center in Laguna Hills, CA, wasn\u2019t involved in the study, but agreed with the scientists\u2019 recommendations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThis review of the current evidence regarding the health effects of ultra-processed foods makes it clear that consumption of ultra-processed foods is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease,\u201d Chen told Healthline. \u201cWe need to better educate the public on the risks of these foods and on the need to prioritize eating whole foods.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/jennifer-l-wong\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Jennifer Wong<\/a>, MD, a cardiologist and medical director of Non-Invasive Cardiology at MemorialCare Heart and Vascular Institute at Orange Coast Medical Center in Fountain Valley, CA, echoed this sentiment. Wong wasn\u2019t involved in the study.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThis [paper] highlights an important and increasingly relevant issue \u2014 the impact of ultra-processed foods on cardiovascular health,\u201d she told Healthline. \u201cBringing attention to this topic is critical given how prevalent these foods are in modern diets.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"css-zya54r\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"tabbed-article-section\"><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Consuming ultra-processed foods may harm the body in several ways.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cWe think that ultra-processed foods increase risk of cardiovascular disease through many mechanisms,\u201d Chen said. \u201c[These foods] are typically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/too-much-sugar\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high in added sugars<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/heart-disease\/good-fats-vs-bad-fats\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unhealthy fats<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/low-sodium-diet\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sodium<\/a>, all of which lead to increased inflammation and increased risk of many cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/high-cholesterol\/cholesterol-management\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high cholesterol<\/a>, and diabetes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThese foods also seem to disrupt our natural gut bacteria, further worsening <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/chronic-inflammation\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">systemic inflammation<\/a>,\u201d Chen added. \u201cAlso, increased intake of [ultra-processed foods] leads to less intake of heart-healthy foods such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.utsouthwestern.edu\/profile\/51529\/amit-khera.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Amit Khera<\/a>, MD, director of preventive cardiology at UT Southwestern Medical Center, lists other ways ultra-processed food consumption contributes to health issues:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>may lead to excess calorie intake<\/li>\n<li>may contain high levels of saturated fat, added sugars, or sodium<\/li>\n<li>may trigger the brain to stay hungry even after eating<\/li>\n<li>may cause potential disruptions to blood sugar levels<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cMost [ultra-processed foods] are foods with poor nutritional quality, contributing to excessive calories, and are typically <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/saturated-fat-types\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high in saturated fats<\/a>, added sugars, and sodium,\u201d Khera told Healthline.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"tabbed-article-section\"><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-news\/ultraprocessed-foods-addictive-tobacco\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">February review<\/a> stated that ultra-processed foods may be as addictive as tobacco.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>They noted that the percentage of calories from ultra-processed foods ranges from 61% in the Netherlands to 57% in the United Kingdom, 25% in Spain, 22% in Portugal, and 18% in Italy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>It\u2019s estimated that <hl-trusted-source source=\"Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)\" rationale=\"Governmental authority\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/products\/databriefs\/db536.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">over 50%<\/a><\/hl-trusted-source> of the adult diet in the United States comes from ultra-processed foods.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2772566925002241\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">2025 review<\/a> on the rise of ultra-processed foods notes that the increase in consumption may be attributed to their convenience, lower cost, longer shelf life, and aggressive marketing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>An <hl-trusted-source source=\"The Lancet\" rationale=\"Highly respected journal,Expert written journal,Peer reviewed journal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/series-do\/ultra-processed-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">executive summary<\/a><\/hl-trusted-source> of a three-paper series on ultra-processed foods notes that societal changes are needed to reverse these trends.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThis rise in ultra-processed foods is driven by powerful global corporations who employ sophisticated political tactics to protect and maximize profits,\u201d the authors wrote. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cEducation and relying on behavior change by individuals is insufficient. Deteriorating diets are an urgent public health threat that requires coordinated policies and advocacy to regulate and reduce ultra-processed foods and improve access to fresh and minimally processed foods.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/profiles\/christopher-gardner\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Christopher Gardner<\/a>, PhD, a professor at Stanford Medicine, said the uncertainty about exactly what an ultra-processed food is can also add to the challenges. Gardner wasn\u2019t involved in these studies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cIf it were easy to point out exactly what an ultra-processed food was, that is different than junk food, or unhealthy food, it could be helpful,\u201d Gardner told Healthline. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cBut the overlap is significant. And there are hundreds of cosmetic additives to be on the lookout for. And we don\u2019t actually have great data or great science on each and every one of the cosmetic additives.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"css-zya54r\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"tabbed-article-section\"><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Eating fewer ultra-processed foods may start with better knowledge of unhealthy foods.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThe first step is for people to better understand the types of foods they eat and which foods in their diet would be considered ultra-processed,\u201d Chen said. \u201cThey can then better replace those types of foods with healthier alternatives such as fruits and vegetables.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Wong agreed. \u201cClear and informative food labeling can improve public awareness and help individuals make healthier dietary choices,\u201d she said. \u201cIndividuals can reduce intake by reading ingredient labels carefully, choosing minimally processed or whole-food alternatives, and preparing meals at home using fresh, healthy ingredients.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Prepare more foods at home.<\/li>\n<li>Be deliberate in food purchases at the grocery store.<\/li>\n<li>Make smart choices when ordering out.<\/li>\n<li>Snack smarter.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Khera added that some \u201csimple swaps\u201d can also help.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cMake your own simple vinaigrette instead of buying bottled salad dressing,\u201d he said. \u201cAdd fruit to plain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/recipes\/pov-oatmeal-recipe-roundup\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">oatmeal<\/a>, cereal, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/benefits-of-yogurt\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yogurt <\/a>instead of buying the sweetened or flavored kind. Slice up leftover roasted chicken or make a light tuna salad for sandwiches instead of using processed deli meat.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Gardner agreed that focusing on foods that we know are healthy is a simple way to eat more healthy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cShift the approach to consuming more unprocessed or minimally processed foods,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cWhole foods: Veggies, fruits, legumes, nuts, seeds, [and] whole grains. Those are easier to define.
