Photography courtesy of Allyson Felix<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>When it comes to national policies around paid sick or family leave, the United States falls short compared to other developed countries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Around 28 million Americans lack access to paid sick time, which disproportionately affects low-income workers and their families, particularly caregivers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theraflu.com\/RightToRecover\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">recent survey<\/a> from Theraflu and Wakefield Research of more than 1,000 employed U.S. adults who care for someone in their household found that 80% of respondents couldn\u2019t afford to take a sick day. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>More than half of respondents said they worked while sick because they needed the income, while 28% said that taking a sick day could put their job at risk. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Working parents are often obligated to continue their responsibilities even when they\u2019re sick. Mothers are more likely than fathers to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2015\/11\/04\/how-american-parents-balance-work-and-family-life-when-both-work\/#:~:text=In%20homes%20with%20two%20full,say%20dad%20makes%20more%20money.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">bear the brunt of this responsibility<\/a>, even in the most egalitarian households.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>That\u2019s why track and field icon Allyson Felix is on a mission to help make paid sick time a fundamental right rather than a privilege. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The five-time U.S. Olympian partnered with Theraflu to raise awareness for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theraflu.com\/RightToRecover#footnote-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">The Right to Rest &amp; Recover Fund<\/a>, which has offered microgrants to families that help offset lost income from unpaid sick days. The Fund has distributed more than $1 million in microgrants since 2021.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>As a mom of two, Felix knows firsthand how physically and emotionally taxing it can be to care for young children when you\u2019re unwell. As a former elite sprinter specializing in the 200m, 400m, and relay events, Felix understands the importance of rest and recovery for both the body and the mind.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Now retired, the most decorated American track and field athlete in history \u2014 with 11 Olympic medals across five Games and a three-time world champion \u2014 has her heart set on a new goal: Paid sick leave for all.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s a conversation that we\u2019re having enough of,\u201d Felix told Healthline. \u201cI love that Theraflu is doing something about it for people who are experiencing this hardship.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"tabbed-article-section\"><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Regardless of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/parenting\/happy-parenting\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">parenting<\/a> or caregiving status or even your fitness level, everyone benefits from rest and recovery \u2014 and from sick days when you need them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.org\/provider\/clarinda-hougen-4683559.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Clarinda Hougen<\/a>, MD, primary care sports medicine specialist at Cedars-Sinai Orthopaedics in Los Angeles, CA, said that from an exercise science standpoint, rest and recovery are fundamental. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cWhen we exercise, we place stress on our muscles, tendons, and other tissues,\u201d she told Healthline. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cHealing the microtears that occur in muscle tissues <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/10-benefits-of-exercise\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">during exercise<\/a> results in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/muscular-hypertrophy\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">muscle hypertrophy<\/a> and can only occur during periods of rest. In other words, strength gains and improved endurance occur during recovery rather than during the exercise itself.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Hougen shared a few tips to prioritize rest and recovery:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Get at least 7 hours of sleep per night.<\/li>\n<li>Build 1\u20132 rest days into your weekly exercise regimen.<\/li>\n<li>Practice \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/active-recovery\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">active recovery<\/a>\u201d (i.e., light <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/exercise-fitness\/benefits-of-walking\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">walking<\/a>, cycling, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/13-benefits-of-yoga\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yoga<\/a>, or other low intensity activities immediately after a high intensity workout).<\/li>\n<li>Eat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/balanced-diet\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a nutritious diet<\/a> including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/how-much-protein-per-day\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protein<\/a> and carbohydrates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cAthletes who participate in a variety of different activities that involve different types of movement are less likely to experience injury,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div data-testid=\"widget\" data-widget=\"286054-pull-quote\">\n<h4 class=\"css-1n2359w\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"css-6m5inx\" width=\"40\" height=\"30\" viewbox=\"0 0 40 30\"><path d=\"M28.571 13.556h4.597c3.602.754 6.46 3.39 6.46 7.908 0 5.147-3.852 8.536-8.82 8.536-5.963 0-9.442-4.895-9.442-11.674C21.366 8.285 27.95.88 40 0v3.39c-6.832 1.129-10.932 4.643-11.429 10.166zm-21.49 0h4.72c3.603.754 6.46 3.39 6.46 7.908 0 5.147-3.975 8.536-8.82 8.536C3.478 30 0 25.105 0 18.326 0 8.285 6.584.88 18.634 0v3.39C11.677 4.518 7.702 8.032 7.08 13.555z\"\/><\/svg><span>I just try to do the best that I can each day<\/span><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" class=\"css-1yu8hz7\" width=\"40\" height=\"30\" viewbox=\"0 0 40 30\"><path d=\"M11.429 16.444H6.832C3.23 15.69.372 13.054.372 8.536.373 3.389 4.225 0 9.193 0c5.963 0 9.442 4.895 9.442 11.674C18.634 21.715 12.05 29.12 0 30v-3.39c6.832-1.129 10.932-4.643 11.429-10.166zm21.49 0H28.2c-3.603-.754-6.46-3.39-6.46-7.908C21.74 3.389 25.714 0 30.56 0 36.522 0 40 4.895 40 11.674 40 21.715 33.416 29.12 21.366 30v-3.39c6.957-1.129 10.932-4.643 11.553-10.166z\"\/><\/svg><\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3>Quality sleep and self-care promote recovery<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cRest and recovery should absolutely be considered a core pillar of every individual\u2019s wellness regimen,\u201d Hougen said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cIf rest periods are inadequate over many weeks, the body is not able to fully repair and heal damaged tissues, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/signs-of-overtraining\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">overtraining syndrome<\/a> may develop,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen this occurs, athletes may feel decreased enjoyment in their sport and increased perceived exertion during activity.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>From a physical standpoint, recovery practices might include intentional rest, sleep, and other forms of lighter exercise. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Felix echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that it\u2019s important to recognize when you need rest and recovery and to carve out time and space for it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI just try to do the best that I can each day by being intentional and planning out how I\u2019m going to take care of my body,\u201d Felix said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"css-zya54r\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"tabbed-article-section\"><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>With her Olympic career in the rearview, Felix still maintains an active lifestyle. She hits the track for speed workouts and recovers with other forms of exercise like Pilates or spending time outdoors with her family.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>She stays busy pursuing her latest ambitions, including the Theraflu initiative, a shoe company, and an athletic talent agency. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>But her greatest achievement, she says, is motherhood. Here\u2019s how she finds balance with it all.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><em>This interview has been lightly edited for clarity and length.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3>Why is rest and recovery essential?<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Felix: <\/strong>I think we live in a time where this kind of mentality of \u2018no days off\u2019 and \u2018just pushing through\u2019 is almost glorified. What I found is that it\u2019s just not sustainable, and our rest and recovery are so important. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>I learned that so much as an athlete, but now I see it in every aspect of life and just how valuable it is for everyone. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>You have to fill your cup first. You have to be able to do the things that support longevity and let you do all the things you want to do. And to me, in this phase of life, I understand that more you know now than ever.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3>Why is rest and recovery for caregivers so important?<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Felix: <\/strong>I think I just understand it; I\u2019m living it. And I also understand the double burden of being a caregiver: when you\u2019re sick, your responsibilities don\u2019t stop. People depend on you, the little ones depend on you, and you have to show up for them. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>When one of my kids is sick, I\u2019m navigating that double burden if I\u2019m not feeling well. There are days when I feel like I\u2019m not going to make it, and I tell my husband I\u2019m going to get a 30-minute nap to take care of myself. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Then there\u2019s prioritizing my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/mental-health-resources\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mental health<\/a>, whether that\u2019s scheduling time on my calendar to do something that brings me joy or to rest. You have to make space for it, because there are a million things that will always come up. I try to be intentional about how I take care of myself.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Honestly, I think it used to be a lot easier when it was my sole job to take care of my body and be an Olympic athlete. I had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/how-long-should-i-nap\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a nap<\/a> built into my day, and everything revolved around training. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>I think now, it\u2019s more the reality of how I can prioritize taking care of myself and my family, work, and all of the things. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3>What forms of exercise do you enjoy now?<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Felix: <\/strong>Moving my body just makes me feel like me. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>A lot of times, it\u2019ll look like early mornings or late nights on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/fitness\/best-treadmills-for-runners\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">treadmill<\/a> or doing something at home. I also enjoy playing tennis. I still enjoy doing track workouts. I enjoy doing Pilates, so I try to switch things up and have a nice variety to make sure I keep moving. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Focusing on family has also been a really great exercise for the family. We love to take walks at the end of our days. Now my daughter can ride her bike, and we have one of those little tow things for my son, so we\u2019ll go on the bike path. Staying active as a family is really key as well.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3>What keeps you inspired and motivated? <\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Felix:<\/strong> Motherhood is my greatest role. It brings me the most joy of all the things I get to do. The work I do, I\u2019m passionate about it. When I get to advocate for mothers and parents and do work that I\u2019m passionate about and believe will have an impact, just having a sense of purpose is very fulfilling.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>And my businesses, I\u2019m growing them \u2014 my shoe company, <a href=\"https:\/\/saysh.com\/collections\/shop?srsltid=AfmBOooQ440YhdiJ3q7pLEbVYfQTx1Bq8_Sqpona9yBIOGq3_WVE6UhY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Saysh<\/a>, my agency, <a href=\"https:\/\/always-alpha.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Always Alpha<\/a> \u2014 and knowing that they are in the world, I want them to have the most impact. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>As an Olympian, it\u2019s very clear-cut; success is very easy to determine. Now it\u2019s just shifting that mindset to say that success, to me, looks like impact: How can I put that out into the world? <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>I still love to push myself athletically and set ambitious goals \u2014 there aren\u2019t as many eyeballs on me when I\u2019m doing those things. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h3>What brings you joy and gives hope for the future?<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Felix:<\/strong> Whenever I\u2019m able to be still and disconnect from everything that\u2019s going on around me, I think about the time when I\u2019m here with my family at home. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Whether we\u2019re going on a walk or I\u2019m just watching my kids\u2019 faces, there\u2019s so much joy in just the very simple things.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>I think about how I\u2019m raising them, and I want them to be great people in the world, good people with good values.
