Aidana K\/Stocksy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A new study finds no evidence that fluoridated drinking water affects children\u2019s IQ or the cognitive abilities of older adults.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Experts say fluoride in drinking water helps prevent tooth decay and cavities.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>They add that a person\u2019s dental health directly affects their overall health.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Fluoride in drinking water does not affect children\u2019s IQ or decrease cognitive abilities in older adults, according to a new, large-scale study.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cWe find no evidence that [community water fluoridation] is negatively associated with adolescent IQ or adult cognitive functioning,\u201d the study authors wrote.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The findings are in contrast to Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-news\/rfk-jr-fluoridated-water-safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">announcement<\/a> in April that he would require the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to revise its long-standing <hl-trusted-source source=\"Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)\" rationale=\"Governmental authority\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/fluoridation\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">recommendation<\/a><\/hl-trusted-source> that fluoride be added to drinking water.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>They also contradict previous research, including a <hl-trusted-source source=\"JAMA\" rationale=\"Highly respected journal,Expert written journal,Peer reviewed journal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapediatrics\/fullarticle\/2828425?guestAccessKey=f61d2921-6a2b-436a-8710-c9623f148bdf&amp;utm_source=for_the_media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_content=tfl&amp;utm_term=010625\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">January study<\/a><\/hl-trusted-source>, that has suggested a possible link between fluoride and children\u2019s IQ levels. Researchers noted that the studies were conducted in China and other countries with higher fluoride concentrations than permitted in the United States.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dentistry.uic.edu\/profiles\/scott-tomar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Scott Tomar<\/a>, DMD, a spokesperson for the American Dental Association, said this research provides important information for the public at a critical time. Tomar wasn\u2019t involved in the study.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cDespite misinformation that is out there, the best available evidence indicates that community water fluoridation has no effect on IQ, cognition, or other measures of neurodevelopment,\u201d said Tomar, who is also a professor and associate dean for Prevention and Public Sciences at the College of Dentistry at the University of Illinois Chicago.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.providence.org\/doctors\/pediatrics\/ca\/los-angeles\/danelle-fisher-1134145154\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Danelle Fisher<\/a>, MD, a pediatrician at Providence Saint John\u2019s Health Center in Santa Monica, CA, said the findings confirm previous research on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/what-is-fluoride\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fluoridated water<\/a>. Fisher wasn\u2019t involved in the study.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThey reassure us that the use of fluoride in proper amounts does not have any definitive effects on IQ,\u201d she told Healthline. \u201cIt makes a good case for having fluoride in our drinking water.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"tabbed-article-section\"><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The new study was led by <a href=\"https:\/\/cla.umn.edu\/about\/directory\/profile\/warre046\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Rob Warren<\/a>, PhD, a sociologist and population health expert at the University of Minnesota.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Warren used data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/wls.wisc.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Wisconsin Longitudinal Study<\/a>, which has followed more than 10,000 people in that state since they graduated from high school in 1957. Participants took IQ tests at age 16, then had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/healthy\/heres-how-cognitive-tests-work-and-what-they-look-for\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\">cognitive testing<\/a> done at ages 53, 64, 72, and 80.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The original purpose of the Wisconsin study wasn\u2019t focused on fluoride so there was no data available on urine or blood tests that would have measured exact levels of fluoride. Warren\u2019s team based their estimates on exposure from records of when community water fluoridation began in certain areas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The new findings follow a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.adz0757\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">November 2025 study<\/a> led by Warren that found no link between community water fluoridation in early life and brain function in people at age 60.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Experts note that fluoridation at appropriate levels doesn\u2019t appear to cause any negative health effects.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cAt the levels of fluoride that we use for community water fluoridation in the United States and other countries, there are no adverse health effects,\u201d Tomar told Healthline.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/graham-c-tse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Graham Tse<\/a>, MD, a pediatrician and chief medical officer of MemorialCare Miller Children\u2019s &amp; Women\u2019s Hospital in Long Beach, CA, agreed that the low levels of fluoride in U.S. drinking water pose no threat. Tse wasn\u2019t involved in the study.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThere is no evidence of any health impacts,\u201d Tse told Healthline.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>He added that fluoride, like vitamins or other substances, can pose some issues if people are exposed to high levels. \u201cThat\u2019s the case with many, many things,\u201d Tse said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"css-zya54r\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"tabbed-article-section\"><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The health benefits of fluoride in drinking water were <hl-trusted-source source=\"National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research\" rationale=\"Governmental authority\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidcr.nih.gov\/health-info\/fluoride\/the-story-of-fluoridation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">first studied<\/a><\/hl-trusted-source> in 1909 in Colorado.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In 1945, Grand Rapids, Michigan, became the first state to add fluoride to its municipal water in an effort to help prevent tooth decay. Initial studies reported that tooth decay among Grand Rapids schoolchildren born after 1945 had declined by 60%.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In 1962, the U.S. Public Health Service <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4547570\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">recommended<\/a> fluoridation in drinking water.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The CDC <hl-trusted-source source=\"Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)\" rationale=\"Governmental authority\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/fluoridation\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">states<\/a><\/hl-trusted-source> that the optimal level of fluoride in drinking water to prevent cavities is 0.7 milligrams (mg) per liter (L). That amounts to 3 drops in a 55-gallon barrel. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sdwa\/fluoride-drinking-water\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">legal limit<\/a> for drinking water in the United States is 4 mg\/L.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Today, more than <hl-trusted-source source=\"Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)\" rationale=\"Governmental authority\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/fluoridation\/php\/statistics\/2022-water-fluoridation-statistics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">70%<\/a><\/hl-trusted-source> of people in the United States on public water systems receive fluoridated water. That represents more than 200 million Americans.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>However, that number is shrinking. Two states \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/deq.utah.gov\/drinking-water\/fluoride-drinking-water\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Utah<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/adanews.ada.org\/ada-news\/2025\/may\/florida-second-state-to-ban-community-water-fluoridation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Florida<\/a> \u2014 have enacted bans on fluoride in drinking water. Several other states, including <a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/KY\/bill\/HB16\/2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Kentucky<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lailluminator.com\/2026\/03\/18\/fluoride-water-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Louisiana<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kbia.org\/kbia-news\/2025-04-04\/some-missouri-communities-are-trying-to-end-fluoridation-in-their-water-systems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Missouri<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/dimensionsofdentalhygiene.com\/oklahomas-fluoride-rollback-may-cost-507-million-in-dental-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Oklahoma<\/a>, have pending legislation to limit fluoride.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/nutrition\/fluoride-good-or-bad#what-is-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Fluoride<\/a>, a chemical found in nature as well as in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/fluoride-toothpaste\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">toothpaste<\/a> and drinking water, works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria that cause cavities, strengthening the hard outer enamel of teeth, reversing the damage caused by cavities, and supporting new bone formation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Excessive fluoride intake, however, may cause <hl-trusted-source source=\"Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)\" rationale=\"Governmental authority\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/oral-health\/about\/about-dental-fluorosis.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">fluorosis<\/a><\/hl-trusted-source>, a condition that can result in white spots or brown stains on teeth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Experts say the benefits of fluoridated water are numerous and widespread.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cWe have extremely consistent evidence that water fluoridation helps to prevent tooth decay and reduces its severity,\u201d said Tomar. \u201cWe also have very consistent evidence that community water fluoridation saves money for families, communities, and state governments by reducing dental costs and missed days of work or school due to dental problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThe primary danger of stopping fluoridation is that the levels of tooth decay, and its related treatment costs will increase,\u201d he added. \u201cThe effects show up first \u2013 and most pronounced \u2013 among the youngest children in the community but ultimately affects everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"tabbed-article-section\"><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Among other issues, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/gingivitis\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gum disease<\/a> can affect blood sugar levels in people with diabetes and increase the risk of heart disease and respiratory infections.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>In addition, poor dental health can also lead to the <a href=\"https:\/\/diabetes.org\/about-diabetes\/complications\/oral-gum-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">development of diabetes<\/a> and other chronic diseases later in life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Poor dental health can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/kidney-disease\/kidney-disease-and-dental-health\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also affect<\/a> people with chronic kidney disease.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Fisher said that cavities can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/home-remedies-for-abscess-tooth\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abscesses<\/a> and infections, which can affect any part of the body.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cCavities aren\u2019t just little holes in your teeth,\u201d she told Healthline. \u201cInfections can spread and cause a wide variety of problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cOral health isn\u2019t limited to the mouth,\u201d Tse noted. \u201cIt\u2019s connected to overall health.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"css-zya54r\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"tabbed-article-section\"><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>CDC officials say there are a <hl-trusted-source source=\"Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)\" rationale=\"Governmental authority\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/oral-health\/prevention\/oral-health-tips-for-adults.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">number of ways<\/a><\/hl-trusted-source> you can promote good oral health. Among their suggestions:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid foods and drinks with added sugars.<\/li>\n<li>Drink fluoridated water and use fluoridated toothpaste.<\/li>\n<li>Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss regularly.<\/li>\n<li>Visit the dentist at least once a year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Fisher agreed with these recommendations and added a few more suggestions for parents.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>She said adults should set a good example for children on regular brushing and flossing. She adds that parents should avoid giving children too many drinks and foods with added sugars.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Fisher said babies should never fall asleep while drinking juice or soda from a bottle. That allows sugar to coat their tiny teeth. She added that gummy products can also stick to teeth and should be used sparingly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Tse agreed that good dental habits are important for children, as their teeth are still growing. He said that if everyone had access to quality <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/dental-and-oral-health\/how-often-should-you-get-your-teeth-cleaned\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dental care<\/a> and adhered to healthy dental habits every day, then perhaps fluoridated water wouldn\u2019t be necessary.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cMaybe we wouldn\u2019t need fluoridated drinking water under those circumstances, but that\u2019s not the reality,\u201d he said. \u201cFluoridation is a cheap, effective way to promote good dental care.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"css-zya54r\"\/><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-news\/fluoride-drinking-water-no-effect-iq-brain-function-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Share on PinterestA new study found no link between fluoride in drinking water and negative impacts on brain health.
