She was 22 years old and found a lump on her breast that led to unnecessary surgery; the lump turned out to be noncancerous.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI learned a lot about myself, and I think that was the beginning of advocating for myself, with my health and everything else,\u201d she told Healthline. \u201cI think it was a real moment to, I guess, empower myself and recognize the weakness of\u2026not asking questions\u2026and relying solely on the doctor, and also not getting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/importance-of-second-opinions\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second opinion<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cAnd so, I really didn\u2019t do anything except go in, then go and schedule a surgery,\u201d she said. \u201cI have a lot more curiosity for my health now than I did then.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Seeking out a second opinion is always critical when it comes to health, said <a href=\"https:\/\/med.miami.edu\/faculty\/mikkael-a-sekeres-md-ms?_gl=1*1k75y7i*_gcl_au*MTc1NTQ4MzU2MC4xNzcwNjczNjEy*_ga*NDg4MzY1Njk4LjE3NTUwMTE0MzY.*_ga_EZVW0Q1KB4*czE3NzUwNTg1NTMkbzI2OSRnMSR0MTc3NTA1ODU2MyRqNTAkbDAkaDA.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Mikkael Sekeres,<\/a> MD, chief of hematology at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of the University of Miami Health System.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cCancer is a serious diagnosis, and it can sometimes be quite complicated to diagnose,\u201d he told Healthline.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cWe found that major misdiagnoses occurred 20% of the time, and even more frighteningly, 10% of patients received the wrong treatment for the wrong diagnosis,\u201d Sekeres said. \u201cYou owe it to yourself to seek a second opinion on both your diagnosis and the right treatment for that cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"tabbed-article-section\"><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cKnowing that <hl-trusted-source source=\"American Cancer Society\" rationale=\"Highly respected international organization\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer.html#:~:text=In%20the%20United%20States%2C%201,answers%2C%20guidance%2C%20and%20support.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">one out of three people<\/a><\/hl-trusted-source> are going to be diagnosed with cancer [during their lifetime], that should be initiative enough for us to advocate for ourselves\u2026and motivate ourselves to get an annual checkup,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><hl-trusted-source source=\"JAMA\" rationale=\"Highly respected journal,Expert written journal,Peer reviewed journal\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaoncology\/fullarticle\/2827241?guestAccessKey=b5dc4010-343f-4749-bca7-67bf7cb612c1&amp;utm_source=For_The_Media&amp;utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_campaign=ftm_links&amp;utm_content=tfl&amp;utm_term=120524\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\">Data<\/a><\/hl-trusted-source> from 1975 to 2020 estimated that over 1.3 million cancer deaths in the U.S. were averted due to screening programs. The breakdown included:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Mammograms reduce breast cancer deaths by 260,000 women<\/li>\n<li>Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing reduces <a class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c sl\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/prostate-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prostate cancer<\/a> deaths by 200,000 men<\/li>\n<li>Pap smear testing reduces <a class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c sl\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/cervical-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cervical cancer<\/a> deaths by 160,000 women<\/li>\n<li>Colonoscopies or other screening tests reduce <a class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c sl\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/colon-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">colorectal cancer<\/a> deaths by 740,000 people<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cA screening test identifies cancer in an individual who does not yet have symptoms from the cancer, before you or your doctor even know it\u2019s there,\u201d said Sekeres.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>He said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/breast-cancer\/early-detection-of-breast-cancer\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">screening tests<\/a> have become more accurate and less invasive, and that doctors have become better at recommending when to undergo screening tests.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Mammograms, Pap smears, colonoscopies, and regular skin checks are important aspects of maintaining your health and preventing more serious consequences of cancer, he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cPSA testing for prostate cancer should involve a conversation between you and your doctor about the risks and benefits, and screening for <a class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c sl\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/lung-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lung cancer<\/a> should be undertaken by high risk groups, such as current smokers aged 50 to 80 years,\u201d Sekeres said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"css-zya54r\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"tabbed-article-section\"><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>When it comes to screening and your health in general, Liu said, don\u2019t be afraid to ask your doctor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/breast-cancer\/what-to-know-about-her2\" class=\"content-link css-1c2ok3c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">questions<\/a> and drop prefacing your questions with: \u201cThis is a stupid question.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI try to shut that down because I really think that you don\u2019t want to be in a situation where it\u2019s too late,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd I know people who have been in that situation, and I\u2019ve lost people who have been in that situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>If you think your questions are embarrassing, she said to keep in mind that it\u2019s impossible to be an expert in everything and to allow yourself the grace to know when you don\u2019t know something.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s asking a professional or professionals who have\u2026specialized in this particular field what their thoughts are and what their opinions are and then\u2026pooling that together with all the other information that you receive so that you can make the right choice moving forward for yourself,\u201d said Liu.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"tabbed-article-section\"><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><span style=\"font-size:0;line-height:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Over the years, Liu said she learned that keeping to a strict health regimen isn\u2019t realistic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201c[Because] you expect yesterday or today or tomorrow\u2026to be the same and I think that\u2019s difficult, because the weather changes\u2026events change,\u201d Liu said. \u201cI think that it\u2019s better to just be as present as possible\u2026because if you expect it to be a certain thing every single day, you\u2019re probably going to get disappointed, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Parenthood has reinforced this notion for her. Being a mom to her son, Rockwell, has also pushed her to lead by example in preventive health.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201c[Share with your child,] \u2018I\u2019m going to go and get my checkup,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cDon\u2019t make it something that\u2019s scary.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>She hopes that sharing her personal journey publicly will reduce some of the fear around screenings and empower others to take control of their health.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t often talk about my personal life\u2026and for me to do that\u2026it has to make a difference for someone else,\u201d said Liu. \u201cI often feel like advocacy starts with a personal story, and sometimes you have to reveal something about yourself in order for action to happen, and I\u2019m okay with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"css-zya54r\"\/><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health-news\/lucy-liu-unnecessary-breast-cancer-surgery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Actor Lucy Liu is sharing how a misdiagnosis at 22 led to unnecessary breast cancer surgery.
