Learn about the differences between hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism that includes the causes, signs and symptoms, and treatments. Hypothyroidism is the low production of thyroid hormone, and hyperthyroidism is the excessive production of thyroid hormone. Causes of hyperthyroidism include too much iodine intake, Grave&#8217;s Disease, Toxic Nodular Goiter (TNG), toxicity of thyroid hormone replacement medication (Synthroid). Causes of hypothyroidism include low intake of iodine, Hashimoto&#8217;s Disease, toxicity of antithyroid medication, or a pituitary tumor. A life-threatening complication of hyperthyroidism includes Thyroid Storm, and a life-threatening complication of hypothyroidism includes Myxedema Coma. Treatment for hyperthyroidism would include antithyroid medications like Tapazole or PTU, beta blockers &#8220;Inderal&#8221;, radioactive iodine therapy, or thyroidectomy.
